THAT SOMETHING… |
Contact with young people teaches humbleness. The main purpose of meetings and conversations with students is not really to give them knowledge or skill. Much more important is trying to make them realize what visual communication is all about. Whatever we, the authors, attempt to convey, may be understood in many different ways, often contrary to our original intentions. In the sphere of knowledge this could be considered a kind of error which may and ought to be corrected, but in the sphere of art – since art is not knowledge – this kind of correction is absolutely unnecessary because we find ourselves in the field of non-knowledge, in the face of which all we can do is work out some kind of our own attitude. And one’s attitude cannot be taken over by the student or taught in any way. Actually our contact with students in a workshop is based on a mutual transfer of information and its translation, during which we can study the potential of visual communication with regard to our ignorance, feelings, intuitions, guesses. How do we grasp That Something…? At this exhibition we present the works of students from the III Workshop of Photography at the Artistic University in Poznań, works conceived on different stages of their education, starting from the first year and ending with those final graduation projects that crown the process of schooling. The teacher’s cooperation with the students makes us verify our own attitude constantly, but the teacher’s position is difficult also because contemporary authors have the right to reach freely for absolutely any means of expression. The problem of the multimedia and intermedia has nowadays become, in fact, the problem of every workshop at any artistic school. A completely new sphere of imagery is being born, constructed from mutually intermingled instruments and methods, so it is quite hard to separate photography from other means of registrating and generating images. This new environment absorbed photography which is now but one of many elements of communication and image production. Therefore, these days young authors have at their disposal such possibilities of selecting means of artistic articulation that have been unheard of until today. |
